Newborn Photography Session and How best to prepare
Newborn photography is all about capturing the beauty and innocence of new life. Your newborn experience should be calm, relaxing and full of joy as we safely capture those precious first moments. Leaving your home with a new baby can be quite overwhelming however, with a little preparation, you can ensure everything goes smoothly on the day.
Here are some tips on how to best prepare for your newborn photography session
1. schedule your newborn photography session within the first two weeks
Newborn photography sessions are ideally scheduled within the first two weeks, as babies are usually sleepier and can be easily positioned into those adorable, curly poses. While this two-week timeframe is recommended, sessions can still be done up to six weeks of age. However, older babies may be more alert and take a little more time to settle and pose.
2. Get your toddler use to your baby
It may sound a bit silly, but letting your toddler have supervised snuggle time on the bed can be beneficial for your session. Encourage your toddler to look forward to these moments with their new sibling by making it a daily routine and enjoying the adorable bonding time leading up to your newborn photography session.
3. PREPARE THe night before your newborn photography session
Preparing your clothes, packing the nappy bag, and getting everything ready the night before can make your morning much easier. As a mum, I know that leaving everything to the last minute never works. Reduce stress by planning ahead and getting organized the night before.
4. Pack the essentials
Things to pack in your nappy bag:
- Snacks for your toddler
- Snacks for you
- Water
- Nappies
- Breastpads
- Bottles and formula (if not breastfeeding)
- Pacifier (if you are against using a pacifier, no need to bring one)
- Change of clothes (there are always poo explosions)
- Entertainment for your toddler
5. Preparing baby the morning of your newborn photography session
It's important to maintain your baby's routine on the day of your newborn photography session. If your baby is hungry, feed them. If they are tired, let them sleep. An overstimulated baby who is waiting to be fed may become very upset, making the session more challenging. Continue with your morning as you normally would. Once you arrive, I will assess whether it's best to start photographing right away or if feeding is necessary.
6. Most importantly!
Relax! A stressed mum can lead to an unsettled baby, as they can sense tension. Juggling life with your newborn can be tricky and as a mum myself, I understand that sometimes feeds can take a little longer than usual or your newborn decided to filled their nappy on the way out the door. Breath and know this is totally normal and it will be ok. Send through a message to say you'll be late and I will be patiently waiting with a welcoming smile for when you arrive.
